POLITICS: Caution and confusion rules

Friday - By ADELIA HALLETT | This week’s political action has seen carbon prices surging forward again.


Friday - Ten years ago, Federated Farmers was predicting sheep farmers would, collectively, have to sell another 4.7 million lambs to cover the cost of coming into the Emissions Trading Scheme, which was supposed to happen in 2013. Legislation now before Parliament will, if passed, see it finally happen in 2025 if the agricultural sectors hasn’t negotiated another carbon pricing regime in the meantime.


Friday - Today, the Bioenergy Association holds a webinar on switching heating in schools from boilers burning fossil fuels to wood pellets, while the Sustainable Business Council has a session on preparing for the “new normal”.

Carbon prices continue the good-news climb

Thursday - Carbon prices jumped another $2 yesterday as the market continued to react to Tuesday’s announcements about the Emissions Trading Scheme.


Thursday - Spot NZUs opened at $27.00 bid and $28.25 offered on the CommTrade platform this morning, after last fixing at $28.00.


Thursday - Ten years ago, a dairy farmer diversifying into carbon was telling Federated Farmers to stop “huffing and puffing” about the Emissions Trading Scheme.


Thursday - Parliament takes a break today from discussing climate change, with the third reading of the Emissions Trading Scheme reform bill and the committee stage of the Resource Management Act reform too low on the order paper to get an airing.
