Government planting target OK, say forest owners

THE GOVERNMENT'S plan to plant an extra 50,000 hectares of new forest a year is “optimistic but achievable”, say forest owners.

“We’ve been talking with (new forestry minister) Shane Jones about what can and can’t be achieved, and he is in no doubt about some of the difficulties in getting more plantings going after more than a decade of no growth,” says Forest Owners’ Association president Peter Clark.
