Southern Ocean has history of storing carbon

THE SOUTHERN Ocean – the 20 million-square kilometre stretch of sea that encircles the earth south of the 60th parallel – released vast amounts of carbon dioxide the last time the Earth warmed, scientists say.

The ocean has long been recognised as playing a key part in the regulation of atmospheric carbon dioxide, and therefore in keeping the world’s temperatures stable.
