THE ABSENCE of sea ice near Antarctica over the past six weeks has astonished scientists aboard the research vessel Tangaroa.

The ship returned to Wellington this morning following a six-week voyage studying ocean, atmosphere, and ecosystem processes in the Southern Ocean.
